(AP) ? A very tiny puppy is sitting inside a coffee mug, trying without success to escape by scratching its little paws against the slippery surface. In recent days, this famous dog has been placed alongside a variety of small objects ? an iPhone, a business card and a tape measure, among other things ? to demonstrate just how tiny she really is.

This is Beyonce, a female dachshund mix who was born March 8 to a rescue dog that was found abandoned, wandering the streets of San Bernardino, Calif. At birth, she weighed just 1 ounce and could fit into a teaspoon. Her caretakers say she’s one of the smallest puppies ever born full-term ? and her story of unlikely survival has captured the attention of people all over the world.

“We had an ultrasound done, and they actually saw that there were five puppies, but one was probably going to be stillborn,” says Beth Decaprio, executive director of the Grace Foundation of Northern California, which rehabilitates abused and neglected animals. “It didn’t look like a viable baby.”

Beyonce wasn’t breathing when she was born at the foundation’s farm in El Dorado Hills, Calif. A veterinarian tried to revive her by performing chest compressions. Then he passed her over to Decaprio.

“I blew a couple little breaths in her mouth,” Decaprio says. “And she started to breathe on her own.”

At 3 weeks old, Beyonce is now about the size of an iPhone, but she isn’t cowed by her much bigger brothers and sisters. She crawled on top of the wriggling puppies as they nursed, trying to push them out of the way.

“They just consider her another sibling,” Decaprio says. “But she is a survivor, and she’s a tough little one.”

Beyonce, whose caretakers wanted to give her a “big” name, is not yet up for adoption, though the foundation has received hundreds of requests from people who want to take her home. When she’s stronger ? and a bit bigger ? the foundation will decide whether to give her away.

The shelter has taken the puppy on a media tour, including big media stages in New York.

Decaprio hopes the little puppy will inspire people to adopt shelter dogs and save them from being destroyed. Many shelters keep rescue dogs for only 12 hours before they must be put down, she says.

“What’s most important about the story is that people are aware of the tiny, little, wonderful miracles that come out of the shelter that sadly are euthanized each and every day,” she says. “Beyonce and her family are lucky, but we know that most of these don’t get that kind of chance.”

(AP) ? Now that President Barack Obama’s re-election campaign has lifted an unofficial ban on using the opposition’s term for his health care law, Democratic activists have been chanting “We love Obamacare” in front of the Supreme Court.

“It just rolls off the tongue much easier than ‘We love the Affordable Care Act,’” said Lori Lodes, who supports the law and has been coordinating public outreach keyed to the court deliberations for the Center for American Progress.

But no presidential campaign makes such a move lightly. Obama’s campaign is trying to use the weight of his opponents’ rhetoric against them. Like martial arts or wrestling, except with words.

“It’s rhetorical jujitsu,” said Kathleen Hall Jamieson, an expert on political communication at the University of Pennsylvania’s Annenberg Center.

Republicans coined the term as an insult, linking Obamacare to an apocalyptic litany of woes they contended it would bring about: rationing, soaring costs, unemployment, death panels ? even if they were nowhere mentioned in the law.

As “Obamacare” became a household word, the president and his supporters faced a choice. They could keep snubbing the term, leaving it to the law’s critics to define what it stands for. Or they could embrace it and try to put their own spin on it. That’s what the campaign chose to do, going public last Friday on the second anniversary of the law’s signing.

“It meets the voters where they are,” said deputy campaign manager Stephanie Cutter. And it does show that Obama cares, she added.

“It’s a word that is hugely popular with our supporters, who will fight to the end to defend the law,” said Cutter.

Some Republicans are not exactly amused.

“It doesn’t matter whether the president and his political campaign choose to use the term,” said Michael Steel, spokesman for House Speaker John Boehner of Ohio. “I believe they have been confident since the beginning of the president’s term that the new law would prove to be popular, and that simply isn’t the case.”

Jamieson said Obama’s move makes sense from a practical standpoint.

“The word has moved into common usage,” she said. “They can’t afford to have their candidate’s name tied to socialism, rationing and death panels. That means they’ve got to claim it and embrace it.”

“Care” is a word that carries positive connotations. So Jamieson says the Obama campaign can now work on directly equating his health care law with Medicare. Denounced as a stepping stone to socialism when it was being debated in Congress, the health insurance program for seniors and disabled people is now considered politically unassailable.

Cutter says it will also help Obama draw a contrast between his approach to health care and Republican plans, including the House budget proposal that calls for converting Medicare for future retirees into a system dominated by private insurance plans.

In the official name of the law, the word “care” was somewhat overshadowed. Congress named it the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, or PPACA. Some lawmakers still refer to it by that acronym, pronouncing it pea-pah-cah.

Supporters have preferred to call it the Affordable Care Act, or ACA for short. But “ACA” doesn’t convey anything about caring.

Campaign officials say there wasn’t much discussion about embracing Obamacare. The president tested the approach at fundraisers. Then campaign manager Jim Messina emailed supporters: “Happy birthday Obamacare … make sure your friends and family know that Obamacare is something to proud of ? and worth fighting for.”

Last year, Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Fla., tried to block lawmakers from uttering the term “Obamacare” on the House floor.

Now the Obama campaign is selling “I Like Obamacare” T-shirts.

No matter which way the Supreme Court rules, they could become the next collector’s item for political junkies.

Osaka University wants to shake your hand with its robotic glove (video)

Image
Feel like you aren’t connecting with the people you video chat with? A team from Osaka University has developed a robotic hand that’ll start a chat by gripping your paw with the warmth and firmness of a rugby player. Assembled from silicone and sponge, the researchers fitted a film heater to keep the electrical extremity at 37 degrees Celsius — the theory being that if its warmer than your own hand, you’re more predisposed toward it. Future plans for the mechanical metacarpus include adding a pressure sensor so it’ll match your grip and welding it to a telepresence robot for executives to harass their colleagues with a constant stream of formal greetings. If you’re wondering, the answer’s yes; we do have footage of terrified exhibition guests giving it a go after the break.

Pope wraps up Cuba visit with Mass in Revolution Plaza; meeting with Fidel Castro

HAVANA – Pope Benedict XVI wraps up his visit to Cuba on Wednesday with an open-air Mass in the shrine of the Cuban revolution, hoping to revive the Catholic faith in this communist-run country. His other appointment: a meeting with Fidel Castro.

The former Cuban leader announced late Tuesday that he would happily meet with Benedict, saying he was asking for just a “few minutes of his very busy time” in Havana.

The Vatican had already said Benedict was available, so the confirmation from Castro ends weeks of speculation as to whether Castro would repeat the meeting he held with Pope John Paul II during his historic 1998 visit.

“I will happily greet His Excellency Pope Benedict XVI as I did John Paul II, a man for whom contact with children and the humble raised feelings of affection,” Castro wrote.

Benedict’s Mass in Revolution Plaza comes 14 years after John Paul preached on the same spot before hundreds of thousands of people, Fidel among them. Then, an image of Jesus Christ was displayed opposite the plaza’s iconic image of revolutionary hero Ernesto “Che” Guevara, a remarkable development for a country that had been officially atheist until 1992.

This time, a huge poster of Cuba’s patron saint, the Virgin of Charity of Cobre, covered the facade of one of the buildings facing the plaza near Che. The icon has been the spiritual focus of Benedict’s three-day visit, timed to coincide with the 400th anniversary of the appearance of the diminutive statue.

Benedict visited the statue in a sanctuary near the eastern city of Santiago on Tuesday morning and prayed to her for greater freedom and renewal for all Cubans ? another gentle nudge to the government to continue opening itself up to greater reforms.

“I have entrusted to the Mother of God the future of your country, advancing along the ways of renewal and hope, for the greater good of all Cubans,” the pope said. “I have also prayed to the Virgin for the needs of those who suffer, of those who are deprived of freedom, those who are separated from their loved ones or who are undergoing times of difficulty.”

A top official in Havana quickly responded: “In Cuba, there will not be political reform,” said Vice-President Marino Murillo, Cuba‘s economic czar.

Before arriving on his trip to Mexico and Cuba, Benedict asserted that Marxism as it was originally conceived is irrelevant for today’s reality. Upon arriving on Cuban soil, however, he his language was less direct, and he pressed instead for the Roman Catholic Church to play a greater role in Cuban life and for Cuba’s people to enjoy greater freedoms.

The Vatican spokesman said the Holy See didn’t take Murillo’s comments as a rebuff to Benedict’s call, noting that the pope isn’t a political leader who can change laws or political systems. But he said Benedict does have some concrete hopes for the visit.

During a nearly hour-long meeting Tuesday with Cuban President Raul Castro ? twice the normal length of papal audiences with heads of state ? Benedict asked that the government declare a holiday for Good Friday, when Catholics commemorate the death of Christ.

The request, like so much of this trip, was a follow-up of sorts to Cuba’s decision to declare Christmas a national holiday in honour of John Paul‘s 1998 visit. Cubans hadn’t had Christmas off for nearly 30 years.

“It’s not that it changes reality in a revolutionary way, but it can be a sign of a positive step, as was the case of Christmas after John Paul’s visit,” said the Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi.

The government didn’t give an immediate response, but Lombardi said it was natural for Cuba to take time to consider it. The government frequently declares holidays at the last minute and Good Friday this year falls in less than two weeks, on April 6.

Benedict also raised “humanitarian” issues with Raul Castro, an apparent reference to political prisoners. Lombardi said he didn’t know if individual cases were discussed.

Primarily, though, Benedict came to Cuba to try to win a greater place in society for the Catholic Church, which has been marginalized in the six decades of Castro family rule.

The island’s Communist government never outlawed religion, but it expelled priests and closed religious schools after Fidel Castro came to power in 1959. Tensions eased in the early 1990s when the government removed references to atheism in the constitution and let believers of all faiths join the Communist Party.

John Paul’s 1998 visit further warmed relations. But despite years of lobbying, the church has virtually no access to state-run radio or television, is not allowed to administer schools and has not been granted permission to build new places of worship. Only about 10 per cent of Cubans are practicing Catholics.

“Naturally a papal visit hopes to be an impulse for further steps, be it for the life of the church or for the good of society in its entirety,” Lombardi told reporters, citing media, education and health care as areas where the church wants a greater say.

But in a country that once preached atheism and still is dominated by Marxist thought, that’s a hard sell for the government and for ordinary Cubans alike.

Ana Blanco, a 47-year-old Havana resident, complained that people were being told to attend Wednesday’s Mass, saying the pressure seemed odd in a country that in her early years taught her religion was wrong.

“Now there’s this visit by the pope, and I don’t agree with giving it so much importance or making anyone go to the Mass or other activities,” the office worker said. “Before it was bad, now it’s good. That creates confusion.”

Wife defends suspect: ‘He would not do that’

SEATAC, Wash. (AP) ? The wife of a U.S. soldier accused of killing 17 Afghan civilians says her husband showed no signs of PTSD before he deployed, and she doesn’t feel like she’ll ever believe he was involved in the killings.

“I don’t know a lot about the symptoms of PTSD, so I wouldn’t know,” Karilyn Bales told NBC’s “Today” show. “He doesn’t have nightmares, you know, things like that. No dreams,” she said.

She defended her husband, Staff Sgt. Robert Bales, in a weekend interview with Matt Lauer that aired on Monday. Officials say Bales left his base March 11 in southern Afghanistan and killed eight Afghan adults and nine children.

The wife of the Joint Base Lewis-McChord soldier said the accusations are “unbelievable to me.”

“He loves children, he’s like a big kid himself,” she said. “I have no idea what happened, but he would not … he loves children, and he would not do that.”

He was formally charged Friday with 17 counts of premeditated murder and other crimes, and is being held at a U.S. military prison at Fort Leavenworth, Kan.

Karilyn Bales was in a grocery store when she first heard of the rampage in a phone call from her parents.

“They said well it looks like a U.S. soldier, some Afghan civilians were killed by a soldier,” she said.

She learned more when she got home.

“I saw 38-year-old staff sergeant, and I don’t think there are very many of those, and I probably prayed and prayed that my husband wasn’t involved,” she said. “And then, I received a phone call from the Army saying that they would like to come out and talk to me. And I was relieved, because when you get a phone call, you know that your soldier is not deceased.”

She was told about the shootings.

“They held my hand and they just said that perhaps, you know, they thought that he had left the base, and gone out and perhaps killed the Afghan civilians, and that was really the only sentence, and I just started crying,” she said.

The deaths of the nine Afghan children are especially difficult.

“It’s heartbreaking. I can’t imagine losing my children, so my heart definitely goes out to them for losing all of their children.”

Bales was on his fourth tour of duty in a war zone, having served three tours in Iraq, where he suffered a head injury and a foot injury. His civilian attorney, John Henry Browne, had said the soldier and his family had thought he was done fighting.

“It was a big shock because we weren’t on the schedule to be deployed again, to be honest with you. He didn’t want to miss out on any more of his kids’ life,” Karilyn Bales told “Today.”

Bales said she feels he was mentally fit when he was deployed. He never told her about a traumatic brain injury he suffered while in Iraq, until he returned home.

“Not until he came back and said that he, you know, had been blown up,” she said. “He shielded me from a lot of what he went through. He’s a very tough guy.”

U.S. investigators have said they believe Bales killed in two episodes, returning to his base after the first attack and later slipping away to kill again. He is reported to have surrendered without a struggle.

Karilyn Bales has spoken to her husband by telephone twice since he was detained. The soldier called his wife first from overseas shortly after massacre, and then last week from Fort Leavenworth.

They didn’t talk about what happened.

“Not on the monitored phone call. So we couldn’t discuss those details. He was ? seemed a bit confused. As to where he was and why he was there,” she said.

She says he’ll probably tell her about it when they meet.

“I don’t think anything will really change my mind in believing that he did not do this. This is not what it appears to be,” she said.

The couple has two young children, a girl named Quincy and a boy named Bobby. They are now living on the base at Joint Base Lewis-McChord.

The Bales family had a Seattle-area home condemned, struggled to make payments on another and failed to get a promotion a year ago. Karilyn Bales put the family’s Lake Tapps, Wash., home up for sale days before the rampage.

The youngest of five brothers, Bales grew up in the working class Cincinnati suburb of Norwood, Ohio. He joined the Army two months after 9/11, after a Florida investment business failed and after he had worked with a string of securities operations.

Karilyn Bales told the “Today” show she has set up a fund to help pay for her husband’s legal defense.
